For almost a thousand years it was the capital of Egypt, until the Muslim Arabs conquered the city in AD 641 and founded a new capital at Fustat.Alexandria was the most important cultural centre of the antique Mediterranean; its famed library was the largest in the ancient world. The Lighthouse of Alexandria, built on the small island of Pharos just off the coast, was considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
